For Photoshop 5.x Users |
There are a number of ways to make an outline for a text layer or an object in Photoshop. It really depends on which version you are using. Below it explains the steps for Photoshop 5.0. If you have Photoshop 5.5+, please scroll down.

| Step 1: |
Open a new image with a width of 200 and a height of
100.
Create your text. You might want to set the tracking of the
text to 50.

Step
2: |
Now CTRL click the text layer to select it.
Go to (Select > Modify > Expand)
and use a setting of about 2
|

| Step 3: |
Create a new layer (CTRL + Shift + N).
Make sure you keep the selection active.
Select the Paint Bucket Tool (K)
and fill the selection with black.
Press (CTRL + D) to deselect
it. |

Final: |

Now go to the layer palette and drag the black text layer
below the original text layer.

One Step for Photoshop 5.5 Users |
Create your new text layer.
Go to (Layer > Effects > Outer
Glow)
Use the same settings that I have here.

Create your new text layer.
Go to (Layer > Layer Style> Stroke)
Use the same settings that I have here.
